SS Central America carried 13,600 kg of gold when it sunk in 1857.
Found in 1988, only 5% shipwreck could be excavated. In 2014, Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc., an American company which enterprises in the salvage of deep-water shipwrecks, started re-exploring the site. Recovering more than 15,500 gold and silver coins and 45 gold bars from the shipwreck, the estimated value of the entire horde is around $100-150 million.
The ship was declared a total loss on 6 July 1994. The 344 foot (105 m) stern section collapsed completely to port and sank in 1996, while the 379 foot (116 m) bow section remained intact.
