The Hawaiian Islands were first brought under the rule of King Kamehameha in 1810. The King allegedly had jewelry and wealth worth millions of dollars buried with him when he passed away in 1819. However, the location of Kamehameha's burial chamber has not yet been discovered. In Hawaii, there is a saying that claims only the morning star is aware of the location of Kamehameha's bones. Some people think that the King is buried either in a cave in Maui's Iao Valley, where many other notable Hawaiian chiefs were buried, or at the royal burial site in the palace of Moku'ula. But, according to Hawaiian tradition, his bones must remain undisturbed in order to preserve his authority. The mystery of the Hawaiian King’s hidden treasures is only one of a number of ancient mysteries researchers cannot explain.
Since he was instrumental in controlling the sandlewood trade Kamehameha amassed a fortune for his kingdom through a government monopoly on sandalwood trade but also the imposition of port duties on visiting ships. It is fair to assume that his tomb contains significant riches.
