Altoona County, Georgia Gold Rush in 1829 Providing Gold for the U.S. Treasury

One of the earliest gold rushes in the United States was in Georgia. News of the gold discover sparked one of the first major gold rushes in the U.S. By mid 1829, Georgia received tens of thousands of hopeful miners salivating to hit it rich. the mines numbered in the hundreds. As has been proven by time, businessmen and miners quickly followed. Others with a sense that gold discovery would spark economic development which followed. Of course, towns and settlements followed rapidly.

Alatoona, Georgia was one of the first boom towns in Georgia, early in our country's development. Allatoona is an unincorporated town in Barlow County Located in the state of Georgia, it is situated along 6 miles southeast of Cartersville. It was a small town community until a dam was built. Built at the base of the Etowah river, the dam completely flooded  the town of Allatoona.
