Known as the Gold Country (or the Mother Lode Country), this region of northern California is the site of many a mountainous town where gold was found. On the Western slope of the Sierra Nevada, this is an area of gold mines and many mineral deposits. These deposits were the attraction for many immigrants to the United States in the 19th century.
These immigrants were referred to as 49ers (the gold rush starting in 1849). Some of the towns in this mountainous northern region of California were: Mariposa, Sutter Creek, Nevada City, Grass Valley, Placerville, Columbia, Jamestown, Jackson, Folsom, and Sonora. There are others.
