If you are familiar with the Nugget Bucket, then this idea for a gold trap is pretty neat. The gold snare sits just below the surface of the running stream - it requires a lot of running water with a velocity behind it. A nugget bucket takes water to run material through a classifier, but a bucket at a time. The advantage of the snare is that is pretty easy to make and light to carry. I love the concept. No doubt you have run into this situation. You have prospected a wash or riverbed of some kind and you already have found gold in it. You discover a portion of it with a good bend and large boulders piled up. But how to move them. Sometimes you cannot get heavy equipment in, and you are strong, but not superman, and these babies weigh up to 500 pounds. How does one man move those without hauling tons of equipment in.? I found this blog to be extremely interesting. It is written by ProspectorJack and does a good job of outlining the politics behind legislation to limit prospecting. It is entitled Appalachian Gold Prospectors Prospecting Adventures. "In the Defense of Prospecting" is quite complete in its discussion of the political climate vis-a-vis gold prospectors. Here is another, I hope helpful, article I have found. You may know that meteorites can attract prices greater than gold. But how do you find one? Well, using a metal detector is a good idea, but you need to be careful. I have found rock/volcanic material with heavy concentrates of iron in Arizona that are very dark and heavy, and resemble what I have seen on TV shown to be meteorites. Obviously, you need some ways to test any subject material you are interested in as a possible meteorite. Using appearance, magnetic test, streak test, window test, nickel test, and density and specific gravity, you will have an extremely good chance of verifying your find is a meteorite.
