There is so much to love about Scandinavia. Enjoying cold weather sports, good fishing, and extremely well-educated people. What more could you ask for? Well, how about this. Dare I say, what most people don't realize is that these countries possess great mineral wealth.  What's Norway Got? If you look at almost any photograph of Norway, you see sheer rock cliffs and mountains to the sea. Eidsvold, a city in Akerhus county, was the location of the first gold mine established in 1758.  A copper mine not far away showed sulfide gold. Ole Viborg copper mine originally tipped miners off to the possibility of area gold. That gold was mixed in pyrite and quartz veins. Later, Bomlo, Telemark, and Bindal revealed their gold treasure. As is the case in many of the United States, the gold was a secondary gain after copper, lead and zinc were primarily mined for. Nordic Gold dates to many centuries ago. Its use is common around the world. Nordic Gold is used in Euro coins circulated throughout the EU. the 1, 10, 25, and 50 cent coins are made from this marvelous metal.  The 5 and 10 Swedish kronor are also made from Nordic Gold. the Swedes have used it since 1911. Two zloty coins are used in commemoratives. A copper alloy with its gold caste, Nordic Gold is a mixture of 89% copper, 5 % aluminum, 5% zinc, and 1% tin.  the present-day Nordic Gold was made first by a worker (Mariann Sundberg). While operating at a Finnish stainless-steel company, she came across the combination of copper, aluminum, zinc and tin. Though referred to as Nordic Gold (it isn't), it has properties similar to brass. It is corrosion resistant, as if that is a surprise. After all, brass is made up of zinc and copper. Spanish Jesuit priests established The Josephine Mine in the Uinta Mountains in 1650. They mined rich veins of both silver and gold for a very long time prior to leaving the mine in 1680.
