I have found an interesting PDF from a German researcher which involves an analysis of a number of topics regarding small scale mining. To be honest,one should start with section A2. Read a long and you will find some interesting analysis on mining. If you expect everything to be related to gold directly, move on. But, nevertheless, much of it applies to mining gold. What I like about this post of plans is that the author discusses ways to get an idea of how a dredge could be built. One way, and a way I have used, is to examine some of the best companies who make dredging equipment. Go to a mining/prospecting store and study the relationship between the major parts. Look at the dimensions. Get an idea in your mind how the machine works, in this case, a dredge. A tape measure can be of great help, and also, a paper and pencil. If the shop owner allows it, take some measurements. You are not trying to make anything to sell to others. You simply want to make one for your needs. I seriously doubt if there is much in any store that has not been imitated for personal use. Your  parts will be fabricated from what you can get, not from what the manufacturer used. Next, look at pictures and photographs of equipment. I have done this, also. All you need is information about one dimension and you are pretty well set for approximations of the other dim...

This post concerns the do-it-yourself construction of a BUCKET CLASSIFIER for  prospecting for gold. The plastic pan type classifiers work ok, but can run some money. The nice thing is the water in the bucket acts as a wash for the material in the screen above. The bucket is big enough that you can put shovelfuls of material in it and classify more quickly and in larger amounts. It's kinda like a Gold Nugget Bucket without the funnel and the concentrate dish on the bottom - so it is collecting all the fine stuff. I imagine you can make the screen with mesh any size you want. Just spin the screen. The directions are simple and this could be the answer for many a gold prospector. Look for directions at the bottom of the page. Here is a website with a host of ideas for building your own. What caught my eye was a design for making a gasoline driven vacuum for pulling those big flakes out of crevices. You can use all the help you can get when mining for gold. After paying $5 for a leaf blower he found at a yard sale, he got a 5 gallon vacuum at Lowes and finished off the contraption. It's beautiful. He figures it cost a total of $60 to build. If you have looked at prices at gold mining stores you know that they can run $400 to $500.
