I have found an interesting PDF from a German researcher which involves an analysis of a number of topics regarding small scale mining. To be honest, one should start with section A2. Read a long and you will find some interesting analysis on mining. If you expect everything to be related to gold directly, move on. But, nevertheless, much of it applies to mining gold. Mining equipment, ecology, testing, building, crushing, refining - it's all good.
