Legends persist of fortunes still waiting to be discovered in Virginia, Idaho, Hawaii, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma, each tied to dramatic moments in history—from Civil War raids to stagecoach robberies, pirate voyages, gangster hideouts, and outlaw escapades. One of the most enduring tales is the story of Mosby’s treasure in Virginia. Deep in the forested woods of Fairfax County, a cache of gold, silver, jewelry, candlesticks, and heirlooms—valued at $350,000 in the 1860s and more than $6 million today—is said to lie buried. Confederate ranger John Singleton Mosby and his raiders captured Union troops at the Fairfax courthouse in 1863 and seized the valuables. While retreating toward Confederate lines, Mosby learned Union soldiers were closing in. According to legend, he buried the treasure in a burlap sack between two trees and marked the spot with his knife. The men he later sent to retrieve it were captured and killed, leaving the treasure lost and undiscovered ever since.

Another mystery lies in Idaho, where the Picket Coral Gang robbed a stagecoach on July 26, 1865. The coach carried two strongboxes filled with gold bars, gold dust, and nuggets. The gang killed most of the passengers, but a survivor alerted nearby towns, prompting vigilantes to hunt down and kill the bandits. Only $50 was found on them, and the gold bars were never recovered. Many believe the stolen treasure was buried somewhere in the Portneuf Canyon, waiting for a modern treasure hunter to uncover it.

At Palemano Point on the Big Island, 16th‑century English pirate Captain Thomas Cavendish is said to have buried a fortune worth $5 million in gold, silver, and valuables. Wisconsin’s forests may also conceal a fortune linked to one of America’s most notorious gangsters, John Dillinger. In the spring of 1934, Dillinger and his men hid at the Little Bohemia Lodge near Manitowish Waters. When the FBI raided the lodge, Dillinger escaped out the back door carrying a suitcase stuffed with $200,000 in cash. Legend says he ran into the woods, dug a hole near two pines and an oak, and buried the suitcase. Three months later, Dillinger was killed outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago, and no one has ever reported finding the buried money.

Oklahoma’s Wichita Mountains are home to yet another treasure legend involving Jesse James and his band of outlaws. The James brothers, notorious for robbing trains and banks across the Midwest, had strong ties to Oklahoma. In 1872, Jesse James robbed a Mexican caravan owned by a general near Geronimo, Oklahoma. Pursued by a posse, he supposedly buried one to two million dollars’ worth of gold bullion in the Wichita Mountains. Despite generations of searching, the gold has never been found.
